Are Antibiotics Making You Anxious Or Depressed? Find Out

Illness and the accompanying weakness and fatigue can be a real drain on your body, and prolonged sickness can take its toll on your mind. Antibiotics offer respite from many infections and swiftly do what other medicines may not achieve as effectively. On the flip side, these strong medicines come with their share of side effects, including some that can leave you feeling dizzy, anxious, depressed, or even suicidal. While not everyone may experience a side effect from an antibiotic, it appears that the problem may go deeper. So is it possible that antibiotics are making you more anxious or depressed?

Antibiotics are designed to heal the body and fight off infections that are pulling you down. Ironically, these strong medicines come with their share of side effects, including some that can leave you feeling dizzy, anxious, depressed, or even suicidal. While it may come as a surprise to many, anyone who has experienced anxiety and weakness while on a course of antibiotics will probably relate to this. So is it possible that antibiotics are making you more anxious or depressed?

How Antibiotics Disturb Gut Health And Impact Mood

Research on the connection between gut microbes and the nervous system has been gathering ground, and now it seems like there may be a connection to your mood regulation as well. With neural development and function in the brain and the nervous system being linked to the delicate balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria in your gut, there is every possibility that your antibiotic use is also altering your mood.1 When you consume antibiotics, the composition of microbiata in your gut changes. One study on the long-term and short-term effects of metronidazole and clarithromycin found a decline in bacterial diversity.2 Decline in bacterial diversity and disruption of gut flora opens you up to problems with mood regulation such as depression and anxiety.

Psychiatric Effects Of Antibiotics

Antibiotics can cause symptoms of anxiety like gastrointestinal issues and even dizziness. Some medicines may cause depression and suicidal thoughts as well, as mentioned on their labels as possible side effects.
Fluoroquinolones are antibiotics especially known for psychiatric symptoms like anxiety. However, there may be others that can cause anxiety or depression in your particular case, as a side effect you experience even if it isn’t typical of the wider population. Ciprofloxacin and gentamicin in particular are some of the drugs that have been found to cause this problem. One animal study investigated the anxiogenic effect of fluoroquinolones norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin and concluded that rats treated with the antibiotics showed anxious behavior.3 A separate study found broad spectrum oral fluoroquinolone Prulifloxacin, used as an antibacterial agent, also caused anxiety-like effects in certain tests on mice.4
It is worth noting that antibiotics have some side effects which can be easily confused with anxiety or even depression. For instance, they could make you feel tired and low on energy – something that is likely to be elevated also because of the underlying illness from which you are recovering. This is not actually real anxiety or depression, though telling them apart can be tough.

Why Your Brain Loves It When You Exercise?

That rush you get after a morning run is your brain telling you how happy it is! Exercising can protect your brain from aging, make you smarter and more attentive, boost your memory, and help you sleep better. Exercising may even give you the willpower to resist that doughnut! So what’s stopping you? Move your body, and your brain will thank you for it too!

Exercise is known to get your blood pumping and your heart singing. But did you know that your brain loves it too? While most people exercise to lose weight or get in better shape physically, the benefits also extend to your brain. In fact, you can literally grow your brain by exercising!

Stay Young

Exercising can make you feel younger and more energetic – and that applies to your brain too! Studies show that exercising can have a protective effect on the brain as you age.1 Scientists are also constantly discovering new mechanisms through which exercising keeps us young. A molecule called irisin, produced in the brain during endurance exercise and then released into the bloodstream, can help protect against neurological degeneration. Rising levels of irisin in the circulation cause the molecule to cross the blood–brain barrier, where it increases the expression of a crucial protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and activates genes involved in cognition.2 BDNF is essential for maintaining healthy neurons and for creating new ones that will help prevent age-related neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
The speed at which you process information declines as you age, because of the loss of white matter in the brain. Research has shown that exercise can help preserve both gray matter volume and white matter integrity in the brain.3

Sleep Tight

If you spend the night tossing and turning, amp up your workout routine – you can actually exercise your way to a good night’s sleep. The brain is largely responsible for sending us to sleep and waking us up. Several areas in the brain stem and hypothalamus keep us awake by sending arousal signals to the cerebral cortex. Neurons from a part of the hypothalamus called the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus cause us to go to sleep by inhibiting activity in arousal-promoting centers. Moderate exercise, at least six hours before going to bed, has been found to improve the quality of sleep.4
Hitting the gym right before you go to bed, however, might not be a good idea because a good workout can make you feel energetic and pumped up. In fact, it might be best if you take an afternoon exercise break! People who exercise in the afternoon report fewer disruptions to their sleep than those who exercise in the morning.5 But do be patient – it might take a few months of regular exercise for the benefits to kick in

Nutrition / Diet Cancer / Oncology Carrots: Health Benefits, Nutritional Information

Carrots are often thought of as the ultimate health food.
You were probably told to "eat your carrots" by your parents and you probably tell your kids the same thing, and when asked why, you explain, "Because they're good for you!"
But how did the carrot get such a good reputation and why exactly are the root vegetables so good for our health?
It is believed that the carrot was first cultivated in the area now known as Afghanistan thousands of years ago as a small forked purple or yellow root with a woody and bitter flavor, resembling nothing of the carrot we know today.1

                                 Photograph of carrots

Possible health benefits of carrots

An overwhelming body of evidence exists suggesting that increased intake of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables reduce cancer and cardiovascular disease risks, carrots included.
Carrots are rich in vitamin A.

Cancer

A variety of dietary carotenoids have been shown to have anti-cancer effects due to their antioxidant power in reducing free radicals in the body.

Lung Cancer

One study found that current smokers who did not consume carrots had three times the risk of developing lung cancer compared with those who ate carrots more than once a week.2

Colorectal Cancer

Beta-carotene consumption has been shown to have an inverse association with the development of colon cancer in the Japanese population.3

Leukemia

Carrot juice extract was shown to kill leukemia cells and inhibit their progression in a 2011 study.4

Prostate Cancer

Among younger men, diets rich in beta-carotene may play a protective role against prostate cancer, according to a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health's Department of Nutrition.5

Vision

According to Duke ophthalmologist Jill Koury, MD, vitamin A deficiency causes the outer segments of the eye's photoreceptors to deteriorate, damaging normal vision. Correcting vitamin A deficiencies with foods high in beta-carotene will restore vision.6
Studies have shown that it is unlikely that most people will experience any significant positive changes in their vision from eating carrots unless they have an existing vitamin A deficiency, which is common in developing countries.
So where did all the hype surrounding carrots and vision come from? During World War II, the British Royal Air Force started an advertising campaign claiming that the secret to their fighter pilots clear, sharp vision was carrots. Realistically, the fighter pilot's accuracy was due to a new radar system the British wanted to keep secret from the Germans, but the rumor spread and remains popular today.

Other possible benefits of carrots

The antioxidants and phytochemicals in carrots may also help with blood sugar regulation, delay the effects of aging, and improve immune function.

9 Health Benefits of Cucumbers

Cucumbers belong to the same plant family as squash, pumpkin, and watermelon (the Cucurbitaceae family). Like watermelon, cucumbers are made up of mostly (95 percent) water, which means eating them on a hot summer day can help you stay hydrated.
However, there's reason to eat cucumbers all year long. With vitamin K, B vitamins, copper, potassium, vitamin C, and manganese, cucumbers can help you to avoid nutrient deficiencies that are widespread among those eating a typical American diet.
Plus, cucumbers contain unique polyphenols and other compounds that may help reduce your risk of chronic diseases and much, much more.

                  Health Benefits of Cucumbers

9 Reasons to Eat Cucumbers

1. Protect Your Brain
Cucumbers contain an anti-inflammatory flavonol called fisetin that appears to play an important role in brain health. In addition to improving your memory and protecting your nerve cells from age-related decline,1 fisetin has been found to prevent progressive memory and learning impairments in mice with Alzheimer's disease.2
2. Reduce Your Risk of Cancer
Cucumbers contain polyphenols called lignans (pinoresinol, lariciresinol, and secoisolariciresinol), which may help to lower your risk of breast, uterine, ovarian, and prostate cancers.3 They also contain phytonutrients called cucurbitacins, which also have anti-cancer properties. According to the George Mateljan Foundation:4
"Scientists have already determined that several different signaling pathways (for example, the JAK-STAT and MAPK pathways) required for cancer cell development and survival can be blocked by activity of cucurbitacins."
3. Fight Inflammation
Cucumbers may help to "cool" the inflammatory response in your body, and animal studies suggest that cucumber extract helps reduce unwanted inflammation, in part by inhibiting the activity of pro-inflammatory enzymes (including cyclo-oxygenase 2, or COX-2).5
4. Antioxidant Properties
Cucumbers contain numerous antioxidants, including the well-known vitamin C and beta-carotene. They also contain antioxidant flavonoids, such as quercetin, apigenin, luteolin, and kaempferol,6 which provide additional benefits.
For instance, quercetin is an antioxidant that many believe prevents histamine release—making quercetin-rich foods "natural antihistamines." Kaempferol, meanwhile, may help fight cancer and lower your risk of chronic diseases including heart disease.

5 Reasons Mosquitoes Bite Some People and Not Others

Ever notice how mosquitoes seem to frantically feast on some folks while ignoring others? It's not just your imagination, says entomologist Joseph M. Conlon, a technical advisor to the American Mosquito Control Association. "There is no question that some individuals are more attractive to mosquitoes due to chemicals they secrete from their skin and from their particular skin flora." We talked with experts to learn more about the biological factors that can turn a person into skeeter bait. If the little buggers happen to find you irresistible, here are five possible reasons why:

mosquito-opener-sting

You're pregnant

Female mosquitoes (the kind that bite) have a thing for carbon dioxide. Special nerve receptors help them detect the gas in the environment. What does that have to do with your baby bump? A 2002 study published in The Lancet found that women in the later stages of pregnancy (with a mean gestational age of 28 weeks) exhale 21% more CO2 than their non-pregnant peers. The researchers speculated that this physiological difference could help explain why the pregnant women who participated in their experiments attracted twice as many mosquitoes. (Because itchy welts are just what you need in your third trimester.) But CO2 may not be the only reason you're suddenly more appealing: It could also be that pregnant women emit volatile odors that draw the insects, says Laura Harrington, PhD, a professor in the department of entomology at Cornell University.

You're dripping with sweat

If bug bites drive you nuts, you may want to take your workouts indoors this summer. Lactic acid, a byproduct of vigorous physical activity that's excreted through sweat, is "indeed an attractant" for mosquitoes, according to Conlon. If you're sweating profusely, your higher body temperature may play a role too. Warmth becomes more attractive as mosquitoes approach a potential host, says Conlon.

Sweet Potatoes – Best Food For Diabetics, Side Effects, And Healthy Recipes

Sweet potatoes, though resembling in appearance to yams or the common potato, belong to an entirely different food family, so when you choose sweet potatoes as a dietary root vegetable, you are getting a truly unique type of potato that is nutritionally different from other types.
The intensity of the sweet potato’s yellow or orange flesh color is directly correlated to its beta-carotene content, which is referred to as “Provitamin A” as our bodies can typically produce vitamin A from it.
Purple-fleshed sweet potatoes, on the other hand, are a fantastic source of anthocyanins (especially peonidins and cyanidins) and have outstanding antioxidant activity, more than even blueberries.
Here’s why this is getting the thumbs up from nutritionists to be part of a diabetic’s diet. Also understand when can it be harmful and simple recipes to try at home.

Are Sweet Potatoes Good For Diabetics
15 Reasons Sweet Potato Is A Staple Food For Diabetics

Sweet potato actually helps to balance blood sugar in diabetics. Research shows that sweet potatoes contain adiponectin, a protein hormone produced by our fat cells. People with diabetes tend to have lower levels of adiponectin, and sweet potato extracts have been shown to significantly increase adiponectin levels in persons with type 2 diabetes.

See list of Nigerian Churches you should run away from ........See Why!

The rate at which religion tends to find its way into virtually all that we do, has become very alarming. However, the issue is not with the various religions, but with those who believe and follow these diverse beliefs

It is no news that everyone is free to practice whichever religion suits him or her, but it is sad to note that that freedom has been abused and to a great extent has become man’s captivity.

Christians wear Choir Robes and White Garment church gown to school as Muslims Insist on Wearing Hijab to School

It is common knowledge that Muslim women wear hijab due to their religious tenets. Their women are not allowed to dress in what will make their curves obvious. But we Christians have no such.

Now the Muslims in Osun State went to court to get an order allowing them to wear hijab to school and the Judge granted the order. What did my fellow Christians do? They asked their children to wear Choir Robes and White Garment church gown to school. In the name of a stupid competition...

If Muslims cover head with hijab, we will also wear choir robe? When did Christians start behaving so badly? How many Christians are in choir? How many are attending white garment? So what will the rest Christians wear? Their grand father Masquerade dress? A true Christian shouldn't get involved in this.

Christians Wake-Up All Over The World

Daily Christians are beheaded like chickens, this is disheartening. Do Christians really deserve this? Watch the video below and reshare this video till every Christian sees this.
