Pictures of the dead being buried and details from their last minutes before being executed have been released to the media. According to the pastors who were with them in their final hours, Andrew Chan, Myuran Sukumaran and the other 6 death row inmates declined to wear blindfolds and were singing as they were shot by a 13-member firing squad in the early hours of Wednesday morning.



The 8 men chose to face their executioners and spent their last minutes on earth praising God and singing songs which included ‘Amazing Grace’.

On Wednesday morning, Pastor Christie Buckingham – who read Chan and Sukumaran their last rites – said the 8 death row inmates walked out onto the killing field singing religious songs in the moments before they were executed. Pastor Buckingham said the men conducted themselves with ‘dignity and strength until the end’. Another pastor, Karina de Vega, said it was a ‘beautiful experience’.

Wait Till May 29: Jonathan Warns Buhari Against Forming Parallel Government

The presidency today warned the President-elect Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) against forming a parallel government and overheating the polity.



Minister of National Planning, Abubakar Sulaiman who briefed state house correspondents at the end of weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, said through its actions and utterances, the incoming government was overheating the polity and carrying out actions that may undermine the powers of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sulauman, who is also the sub-committee Chairman of the federal government’s transition committee, said the federal executive council (FEC) rejected the term of reference brought before it by the transition committee of Buhari.

“We did receive from in-coming government’s transition committee some terms of reference which we looked at critically. And ‎council did agree that Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan remains head of the current government of this country. The incoming government should avoid creating a parallel government while the government is still on.

“We take exceptions to some utterances to some of the terms of reference that look as if the current government is being stampeded or intimidated.

“Council frowned (upon) ‎most of the statements, most of the provisions and council members are advised to work in line with the terms of reference of the current government.

“Council members are also of the view that the terms of reference as formatted by our transition committee should be strictly complied with.

“When the incoming government takes over government, they can come out with their programmes; they can come out with their own ‎agenda; they can decide to come out with policies with the way they feel like.

President, Others To Get N3.24bn Severance Pay

President Goodluck Jonathan is entitled to 300 per cent of his annual basic salary (N3, 514,705) when he leaves office.

 

President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice-president Namadi Sambo, and other outgoing government officials are set to receive the sum of N3.24bn as severance allowances.

The President is entitled to 300 per cent of his annual basic salary when he leaves office.

Jonathan’s annual basic salary is N3, 514,705 therefore his severance allowance will be N10, 544,115, Punch reports.

Sambo, whose annual basic salary is N3, 031,572.50, is also entitled to 300 percent after vacating office meaning his severance allowance is N9, 094,717.50.

76 outgoing senators are also set to receive a sum of N462,019,200 as severance pay while 290 outgoing members of the House of Representatives are entitled to N1, 727,134,875.

Jonathan’s ministers will collect a total of N253, 967,212.5 while his aides and advisers will get a total sum of N775, 207,125.

The severance allowances   are contained in the Remuneration Package put together by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

The 8 condemned prisoners on death row in Indonesia have been executed by firing squad.

BBC reports that the executions took place in Besi prison on the island of Nusakambangan early on Wednesday morning local time (Tuesday evening Nigerian time).

Among those executed were Nigerians Raheem Agbaje Salami, Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise and Okwudili Oyatanze.

Various governments and international bodies had appealed for their release, however President Joko Widodo denied celemncy.

A Filipino woman also due to be executed was reportedly spared at the last minute.

A mother turned her son into police after she recognized him as the person who defiled a woman on a train.



15-year-old Deshawn Isabelle of Chicago, Illinois, was charged as an adult in connection with a robbery and sexual assault on a CTA Blue Line train. Prosecutors said that Isabelle’s mother recognized him from surveillance photos and took him to the police station to surrender.

Prosecutors said that video surveillance show Isabelle grabbing the 41-year-old woman from behind, sexually assaulting her before robbing her around 3:00 p.m. Isabelle and the victim were the only 2 people on the train when he allegedly grabbed her by the hair and pulled her to the floor. He then punched the woman, placed his hands inside her jeans and defiled her.

He then took the woman’s iPhone along with $2,000 in cash before fleeing at the next stop.  The victim was hospitalized overnight with a concussion, the prosecutor said. Isabelle, who has a juvenile record that includes a conviction for misdemeanor theft, signed a written confession, police said. He is being held on $1 million bond.

I thank God that I made a promise and I fulfilled the promise. I passed through Kwara and Niger states to Abuja. I was trekking from 6.00am to 6.00pm and anywhere I find myself when it is 6.00pm, I pass the night there.I spent 18 days from Lagos to Abuja.

“Once I found myself inside the bush by 6.00pm and I managed to continue the trek till 9.00pm to a nearby village. I made this promise two years ago. I am based in Ibadan and I started my journey from Lagos because Lagos is the most popular city in Nigeria and I started from Berger junction in Lagos. I am not bothered about what people think. It is a promise between me and my God. I don’t want anybody to believe me. I left Lagos because I made a promise. Right from Kwara state, I never walked alone for five kilometres. Chinonso 30, Stabs Neighbour To Death In Ajegunle Lagos, Blames Spirit

Nweke Chinonso, 30, is being held by the Criminal Investigations Department, Yaba, Lagos for allegedly murdering his neighbour's, Kunle Abiola.



Chinonso claims a spirit came over him, which made him carry out the act, Punch reports.
He narrated his side of the story:

“I no longer go to church. I was relaxing in the front of my apartment at 100, Mba Street, Ajegunle, when my neighbours, Ismail and Kunle (Abiola), told me to join them where they were sitting. I told them I would not and they started to foment trouble.

I did not want to associate with them because I don’t speak their language and I can’t trust them. But while they were troubling me where I sat, Ismail pinned my arms behind me and Kunle slapped me.

Immediately he slapped me, I could not control myself anymore, it was like I was on remote control as a spirit pushed me to go and take a kitchen knife. I rushed in and took the knife, came back outside 
and stabbed Kunle.”

The deceased was stabbed twice, one in the chest and jaw.

Nigerian Army Detains Policemen Without Food For Refusing To Wear Military Uniforms

Ten counter-terrorism police officers attached to the Nigeria army peacekeeping forward operation base in Abuja are currently unlawfully detained at a military barrack in Gwagwalada, Abuja, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

The personnel were locked up since Tuesday without food and medical care for refusing to wear military fatigues for an operation they feared could be illegal.

According to the detainees, they were detained on the instruction of a Colonel Kalejaye, head of the army forward operation base, because they refused his directive to “impersonate” soldiers by wearing their uniforms for a training in Kaduna State.

Some of the detainees told PREMIUM TIMES the Colonel wanted to send them for training at War College, Jaji, Kaduna State, without the knowledge of the Nigeria police authority that deployed them in the first instance.

One of the policemen said he and his colleagues were kept in a cell without food or water for three days, and that they were denied health care.

“We told them that as policemen, we are not entitled to wear military uniforms, unless, we need a corporate signal from our IGP or our authority at force headquarters, that will enable us to go for the operation,” he said.
