Obasanjo Graduates From Open University With Masters Degree In Theology

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo bagged a Master’s Degree in Theology at the fifth convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) on Saturday.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Vincent Tenebe, said in his address at the ceremony that Obasanjo was among other notable Nigerians in the list of the 10,653 graduands which also included the Emir of Hadejia, Jigawa State, Alhaji Adamu Abubakar and the traditional ruler of Awgu, Enugu State, Igwe Felix Okechukwu.

“Having been given the admission to study MA/PhD in Christian Theology, Obasanjo will continue with his Ph.D fully.

“This is very unique considering his age and commitments; he also made a very good cumulative grade point,” Tenebe said.

Speaking further, the VC said that NOUN had achieved its primary mandate of having study centres in all the state capitals across the country. The institution said it will commence the last aspect of its mandate, which is to establish study centres in all the 774 local governments in the next 15 years.

He said that the total number of study centre across the country stood at 72 alongside four new research centres.

Tenebe also appealed to relevant authorities to admit graduates of NOUN into law school as was done in other countries.

“We will not relent in our appeal to the Council for Legal Education to give NOUN Law graduates the opportunity to attend the Law School and be called to the Bar.

“If other countries such as UK, India, South Africa, Tanzania, among others allow their Open Universities’ Law graduates to attend Law School and are called to the Bar, Nigeria has no justifiable reasons to hold her Open University graduates down.

“We must move forward in all these areas as a progressive country,” he said.

EFCC accuse ex-militant leader of N11.8b fraud, files new charges - Tompolo

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is set to file fresh charges against Tompolo and former Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) boss, Patrick Akpobolokemi.

 

The duo have been accused of allegedly defrauding the maritime agency of N11.8b.

NIMASA for the take-off of the Nigerian Maritime University, was approved for an outright purchase by the past administration in the sum of N13, 072,564,822.00 in which a sum of N11, 765, 308, 339.80 had been paid through NIMASA.”

Uwujaren  also added that the rightful owners of the land, the Omadino Community of Delta State, are also making demands for payment.

Tompolo was summoned by the EFCC to clear the air on allegations of N34b fraud levelled against him and Akpobolokemi.

The ex-militant leader has refused to honour the invitation of the EFCC.

Father Sets Own 22-Year-Old Son On Fire For Stealing From Beggar

A 22-year-old man in Omu-Aran, Kwara, Sola Akangbe, died in the early hours of Saturday following wounds from a fire allegedly set on him by his biological father, Kehinde. The deceased, a wheelbarrow pusher, was said to have suffered high degree burns and was confirmed dead by doctors at Ajisafe Hospital, Omu-Aran, where he was rushed to by the police on Friday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that doctors at the hospital battled to save his life as the fire affected most parts of his body.

The deceased was said to have been accused of stealing an undisclosed amount of money from some roadside beggars on Friday and was apprehended and handed over to his father.  The father, a commercial driver, allegedly drove his son to a nearby bush on Omu-Aran-Isanlu-Isin road, tied his hands and legs before setting him ablaze.  Sola, who was still alive when he was rescued, told his rescuers that his father was responsible for the act.

The mother of the deceased, Rachael, was seen crying in the hospital after the death of her son was broken to her.

 

The mother, who is a trader based in Odo-Owa, another suburb, told NAN that a friend had notified her of the development on phone before she rushed to the hospital to check on her son. The mother, who acknowledged that Sola was an unrepentant troublesome fellow, however, expressed shock at the father’s action.  She disclosed that although she gave birth few weeks ago, she had divorced Kehinde about seven years ago as a result of irreconcilable differences. Mr Ajayi Okasanmi, the Police Public Relation Officer in the state, confirmed the incident, saying that the suspect was already in police custody and that investigation was ongoing.

3.  The primary animal host of the Lassa virus is the Natal multimammate mouse, an animal mostly found in sub Saharan Africa.

4.After an incubation period of six to 21 days, an acute illness with multiorgan involvement develops as it affects  several organs such as the liver, spleen and kidneys.

5. Nonspecific symptoms include fever, facial swelling, and muscle fatigue, as well as conjunctivitis and mucosal bleeding.

7. Infection in humans typically occurs by exposure to animal excrement through the respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts.

Rate Of Cultism In Edo Primary Schools Alarming – Police

The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Chris Ezike, has raised the alarm over the high rate of cultism in primary and secondary schools in the state.



The commissioner disclosed this yesterday during the disbursement of scholarship to six pupils of the Police Children’s School I and II, Benin.

According to Ezike, cultism had gone beyond tertiary institutions where it was known to be prevalent, and had penetrated the wall of institutions of lower education.

He urged parents and guardians to pay adequate attention on the actions of their children and wards, especially as it affects the companies they keep even as he advised them not to be too busy to look after their children.

He also appealed to the teachers not to relent in their effort at impacting positive ideals on the children.

“Having said that, I want to ask all DPOs, whose jurisdiction cover our police primary and secondary schools or police institutions, to do their utmost best to offer the necessary security and safety that the children need.

“If you have problems doing, get back to the DC, Ops, who will reinforce you to ensure their safety and security are not compromised”, CP Ezike said.

Headless Body Found At A Prayer Centre In Akure

A yet-to-be identified man has been beheaded at Amese community in Akure, the Ondo State capital beside a mountain where some people pray and worship. A source told Punch Metro on Thursday that the worshippers, who went to pray at the mountain on Wednesday, found the headless body of the man at the base of the mountain. It was gathered that this prevented the worshippers from holding their usual prayer session as they quickly went to the police station to report the matter. The source said the police allegedly detained those who went to report the matter before sending a team to the area to remove the corpse. A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said:-





“After the matter had been reported at the Ijapo Police Station, the policemen combed the entire area, arresting residents indiscriminately. Those that went to report at the police station were also detained by the police. The police said the arrest of the people was part of their investigation.”

The residents also alleged that the policemen left the community where the incident happened and went to nearby communities to make arrest, disclosing that as a result of this, many residents of the area had fled their homes.

Another source explained that the deceased must have been killed somewhere else and dumped in the area.
When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident.

He, however, denied that the police arrested the residents indiscriminately, noting that investigation had started on the matter.

The PPRO said:

“The police did not arrest anybody. When we got information about the incident, we sent our men there to remove the body and also invited some of the residents to ask a few questions from them. We did not arrest or detain anybody.”

Robbery Suspects Set Ablaze After Bullets Couldn’t Pierce Their Body

Two more armed robbery suspects were given the jungle treatment as they were burnt to death by an angry mob in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, barely two weeks after two suspects were also set ablaze after they robbed an Hausa trader at the New Tyres Market.



the incident that led to the recent jungle justice came when the robbers armed with pistols, trailed a woman on a commercial motorcycle with money in a ‘Ghana-must-go’ bag that she was taking to the bank. The suspects allegedly snatched the money from the woman believed to be the cashier of a local bank branch in the town.

After snatching the money, they shot sporadically into the air and in a bid to zoom off, they had an accident with their own motorcycle and the woman and other passer-by who saw the incident raised alarm, alerting a passing police patrol team who went after the hoodlums.

Eyewitnesses report that on sighting the police, the suspects fired shots at them and the police replied but the bullets did not pierce their bodies but they were overpowered by the crowd which dispatched the jungle treatment on them, burning them to ashes.

Nigerian Athlete Blessing Okagbare Beats Usain Bolt To Guinness World Record

Nigerian sprinter and long jumper Blessing Okagbare over the weekend beat the World’s fastest man Usain Bolt to win the Guinness World Book of Records prize for most IAAF Diamond League appearances in 2015. Guinness Book of records said,

“Multi-discipline athlete, Blessing Okagbare from Nigeria participated at 38 Diamond league events between July 3, 2010 and September 5, 2014.

Okagbare’s specialties are the 100m and 200m sprints and long jump,” Jamaica’s Usain Bolt has won the IAAF World Athlete of the year in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 but amazingly hasn’t appeared in IAAF competitions more than Blessing Okagbere.

When the chair, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, Delta State, Mr. Benefit Orugbo, called me on phone, about a fortnight ago, and said that he had a spine chilling case of human rights abuse in his hands, I did not understand the brutality of the matter and almost ignored the issue.

However, it was not until Warri Reporter, EGUFE YAFUGORHI, detailed to meet the victim at an agreed venue reported his encounter with Igbobi Beauty Uzezi, an Air Police of the Nigerian Air-force, NAF, with Personal Service Number, NAF10/25157F, that the reality dawned on me.

Uzezi, who hails from Bayelsa state, revealed that an Air-force officer (names withheld) drugged, raped and infected her with a Sexually Transmitted Diseases, STD, and the said officer detained and tortured her through proxies for daring to expose him and finally got her dismissed from the Airforce.

The air-force officers she complained to and sought help before the hammer fell on her, queried why she chose to make trouble with the officer, pointing out that she was not the only female personnel to pass through the ordeal.

They detained her in a cell with a mad woman, chained her to the bed in the hospital, locked for several days without food to force her to forgo justice.  She refused to surrender and was court marshaled after she threatened to shoot one of the air-force officers used to intimidate her, who allegedly wanted to disarm her.

If your child has had a near drowning, or perhaps swallowed too much water, keep a close eye out for the symptoms of secondary drowning and take them to the hospital immediately. Symptoms can even take between one and 72 hours to appear.

Abominable: Married Woman Seduces Own Biological Son With N50,000 In A Hotel

AN Asaba Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Delta State last Friday dissolved an 18-year-old marriage over a sexual intercourse by a mother with her son.



The 45-year-old Mrs. Nkulumenna Owefa admitted before the court that she seduced her son in a hotel in Abagana, Anambra State, after she offered him the sum of N50,000.

It was gathered during the proceedings of the court that the woman who sells trades at the popular Ogbeonogonogo market, Asaba deceptively asked his son (name withheld) to accompany her to Abagana near Onitsha, Anambra State where she booked into an hotel against her initial plan of meeting with one of her business partners at her residence in Asaba.

The son, who testified in court on what transpired between him and the mother before Senior Magistrate, Sylvester Oboh, said he was called upon by his mother to accompany her somewhere where she had bought some materials for sale.

He said, “On our way to Abagana, somewhere around Toll Gate in Asaba, we were held in hold-up; I was with mum in her car and the glasses were wound up as the AC was on. So our conversation was not being heard by hawkers going about with their wares or other motorists.

“My mum told me that she was going to take over me as my father has taken over my sister and I thanked her, not knowing what she was up to. In Abagana, after a lengthy discussion with her friend, we retired into the hotel room, where my mum gave me a bottle of coke already opened and I felt weak when she now undressed me before putting my man-hood into her private part.”

The husband, Mr. Owefa, who was in court with her daughter, Adlyn to seek the dissolution of their marriage told the court, “All I need is the dissolution of this marriage.

“My wife has committed the worst abomination and the only forgiveness I have for her is the dissolution of the marriage. My son remains my son because I know he was not seduced with ordinary hand.”

The Senior Magistrate (Oboh), having listened to both parties, granted the dissolution of the marriage, saying the man would take of the two children.

Mother And Father Kill Newborn Daughter Over Their Religious Beliefs

A couple whose baby daughter died after they starved her to death due to their their religious beliefs, have been jailed, West Midlands, England, UK.

 

Brian Kandare, 29, and Precious Kandare, 37, were parishioners of the Apostolic Church of God which had strict views on modern medical care. And their implicit faith has led to their 8-month-old daughter death a year ago.

Rebecca died from severe malnutrition and pneumonia as her religious parents left a sick girl in the midwife’s care at the church. The duo believed that the woman’s ‘supernatural healing powers’ would save her. Three days later she died at hospital.
According to doctors, Rebecca has one of the worst cases of rickets they have ever seen and weighed the same as a three-month-old baby. They also didn’t find any trace of food or milk in her stomach.

Prosecuting, Jonas Hankin QC said:“Her illness was treatable and her death was preventable. It is highly unlikely that Rebecca would have died if she has been presented for medical care more than 24 hours before she collapsed. In prioritising their religion over their daughter’s welfare, in breach of their duty to care for her, the defendants are guilty of the most serious abuse of trust.”

Members of the 20-string congregation were encouraged to speak to the church’s midwife about medical problems before visiting the hospital or doctors. If they visited a doctor without permission, members could be excluded from certain church activities.

Her parents repeatedly refused the help offered to them from the National Health Service (NHS) pinning their hopes on ‘faith healing, ritual and the power of prayer’. Brian Kandare was jailed for nine and half years while his wife Precious was imprisoned for eight years.
